Correct, from what I have seen (in this video and another of the same line) they all use their feet to throw switches. Also they use their hands for a lot of coupler maneuvers, so besides losing toes, they probably lost other body parts too. The women in the work is another good point, but the lack of organized labor is scary.
The coal coming out of the mine looks like it has already gone through a crusher.
Even seems too fine for one of those continuous mining machines, which would be doubtful because of all the cheap labor around. So they are either crushing it in the mine, before it gets loaded into the cars, or they are dropping the face with dynamite (shatters) rather than blasting powder (heaves large chunks). Either way- extra dusty down there!

Herb, your right about the coal. I knew there was something about it that was different, and the size of it does suggest that something is going on in the inside, (thanks for pointing that out, I'm surprised I didn't think any of it)
