Not a contestant for anything,
merely a convenient way of building a scene off-site.
The west of England aka ‘the West Country’
shares very little in common with us.
However it is a distinctly separate entity with England,
with a slightly different climate, architecture etc.
We live on the edge of the region, in Dorset,
the best of both worlds with a tenuous toehold on civillisation.
The subject of the diorama is a West Country cottage
with the usual attributes, thatched roof, rendered walls,
inside rooms designed for dwarves, beloved of those who
view the area with myopic vision, thru’ rose tinted eyewear.

The diorama is being constructed on a piece of hardboard,
a tad bigger than A4, handy for toting about.
It comprises a main building, ‘30s corrugated garage,
henhouse (self sufficiency)
and an Anderson air raid shelter, the latter is a legacy
of the ‘39-45 conflict that America may have missed.
We had one in our garden and it was a miserable place.
The diorama has a piece of card with numerous cutouts,
so that the main structures fit ‘in’ rather than on the surface.

The wall is a resin drystone casting,
it has since been washed with lime coloured highlights
over the base brown.
The odd buff colour is a textured finish
that will receive a wash of grey in due course,
but once the grasses, apple trees and vegetation is in place,
you won’t notice the bare soil.
This is merely the start, still lots of detail,
I have two apple trees to ‘plant’
but only after the greenery is down.

A slightly better image of the cottage.
It has been weathered to look like a building of the early ‘50s,
before the influx of second-homeowners.

The gradual addition of vegetation has begun,
although nowhere near complete.
I am still looking for the sheet of curtains,
that will transform the appearance of the cottage.

Thanks
I forgot about this resource
and was unaware of their website gallery.
If I can get somewhere near
to the standards of the buildings on Pendon,
or rather simply improving my standards,
then I will have achieved something.
A copy of Chris's book is now on its way,
and the current project will benefit.

Should you contemplate going into cardboard building modeling,
have a look at the Freerails 'Paper Cutting Machines' Forum.
Chris' methods date from the era when such things were unheard of,
my copy was handed over to me by the late Roye England himself.

Just a few words to complete this Thread.
The cottage is NOT finished,
it is just the end of the beginning.
There are lots of garden plants to create and 'plant',
but can wait until sufficient interest is available once more.
The diorama originally was intended as part of
a practical demonstration exhibit for hobby shows,
except no one seems interested.
This was 45 minutes ago:-

The rear wall really needs attention,
the joints must be hidden and a washing line is required.
That's it folks.
