A couple of months ago I scored big time on eBay. 5 three way HO Peco turnouts and 8 medium Y's, just the stuff for a mini On30 layout junkie. I started fooling around and came up with this configuration for a runaround.

I also started collecting some HO scale rolling stock to use for a display in my office. Nothing fancy just a narrow shelf with a freight train. One piece was a nice GP7. While I was playing with the track I decided to test the GP7. It ran really smooth. One thing led to another and I decided to try an HO switching layout.

I came up with this.

More to come.

Bob

Green Valley District

Operations

I’ll use this diagram to describe the operations on the Green Valley District. Each letter represents a location or “industry” on the layout where cars are spotted.

Original operations

There are 22 locations marked A1 thru G3. The yard will hold 4 cars.

Cars on the layout are always at a specific location. Cars in the yard are never in any order.

At the start, there are 12 cars on the layout and 4 in the yard. The object is to pick up 4 cars and set out the 4 cars from the yard. In the beginning, I used a simple card system to randomly pick cars and locations. I’ll tell more about that later.

The runaround was designed to hold three 40ft cars and each end of the main line three 40 foot cars and a switcher. In reality, one on the cars can be 50 ft long. I use a variety of cars and switchers so depending on the rolling stock in use, you may or may not be able to fit that many cars in any one location. This adds to the complexity.

Revised Operations

Track C became part of the yard. The total number of cars in the yard is now 6. There is no set order to the cars in the yard. I now pick up 6 cars and set out 6. It generally takes 30 to 40 minutes.

Your turn.

I showed you how I’m currently operating the layout but now it’s your turn. Write out an operation plan and I’ll give it a try.

By the way, since everything is manual, I can operate from either side of the layout. That doesn’t really change anything but it might give you some different ideas.

I was talking to Dwyane this afternoon. He's cooking up something sinister for me to try.

Bob, just wondering if Dwayne gave you his sinister plan yet?

I'm new to operations and I am look forward to seeing an operation plan.

Yes Jason,  Dwyane sent me his plan.

First he redesigned the layout. He flipped it over and renamed the tracks.

Then he sent this:

Hmmm!

Here is an operating plan that only uses four switchers and no other rolling stock.

There are four engines on the layout.

One engine on Track A or B

One engine on Track C or in the Yard

Two engines on Tracks D, E, F or G (only one per track)

The gray tracks are powered all the time. The green tracks have power routed through the turnout. So, only Track A or Track B can be powered at the same time. The same applies to Tracks C and the Yard. Of Tracks D, E and F, only one can be powered at a time. Track G can be powered or unpowered. At the beginning, all engines occupy unpowered Tracks.

The engines and tracks are sorted randomly and the starting positions are determined.

Engine1 – Track B

Engine 2 – Track C

Engine 3 – Track F

Engine 4 – Track G

The Tracks and engines are sorted again to determine the final positions.

Engine1 – Track G

Engine 2 – Track B

Engine 3 – Yard

Engine 4 – Track F

The object is to move the engines from the original positions to the new positions by moving one engine at a time. Each move must be in the opposite direction of the previous move.  For example, if the first move is from left to right, the next move must be from right to left even if a different engine makes the next move,

For an engine to come to rest, a turnout must be thrown to unpower the track. If throwing that turnout powers an occupied Track, then the engine on that track will be the next to move.

Engines can only stop on the gray tracks to throw a turnout or change directions. That engine will continue until it enters a track and a turnout is thrown to unpower the track. The runaround is not used as a passing track.

Any engine can make the first move.

OK, if I understand this, here my try at it per your sort

Move 1 - Eng 1 from B to Yrd

Move 2 - Eng 2 from C to B terminate

Move 3 - Eng 3 from F to A

Move 4 - Eng 4 from G to F terminate

Move 5 - Eng 1 from Yrd to G terminate

Move 6 - Eng 3 from A to Yrd Terminate
