It's always a decision between looks and versatility. E. g. those choppers work great on rather straight track, but curves become a problem. Every loop-type coupler has a relatively large catching angle where the hook can engage, and this is directly proportional to car body length and radius. Hooks can be made of steel and then one can uncouple them magnetically by a 'wand'. In LGB's case, they have an underslung hook in order to make use of a lifting ramp. Hooks that engage from above are more reliable on wobbly track than the type LGB uses.
agreed, it seems there is always some compromise.
hook and loops, even with the trainli s-kuplix loops, are an appearance compromise. i did test the push down and twist with a tool for uncoupling and it actually worked well.
can you point me to a "from-the-top" hook? i am wondering how those would work for uncoupling if there are two hooks, one on each car?
I like those "choppers" , but it looks like cars are not really reversible at will? or is there a system like that with the hooks on each end of the car? i guess one hook only gives for extra switching action! but also a need for a way to reverse cars for sure? i would also wonder at the cost. more than Kadee?

Thx Jose. I actually did some looking tonight and found a method for magnetic uncoupling of the tension couplers for (it looks like) OO scale. They mentioned specifically the Bachmann short tension couplers. Looks pretty easy to do and seems to work well as long as the hook can maintain pressure on the loop and not come undone when going over the magnets (none of those I saw did that - they stayed coupled). I might have a try at getting something like that going. Also would want to check and see if the chop couplers were prototypical here in the US, but I bet somebody answers before I get a chance to look.
But there is always good ole Kadee if nothing else crops up and I still feel a need to ditch the hook and loop.
