Hello Darryl,
I use 12" as the minimum curve on the "mainline".
Some spurs and the Black Hawk wye are 9 3/4".
That's a common minimum radius for N scale locos,
including the Atlas N scale Shay mechanisms I use.

Great photos and modeling, Keith.
In the picture after the Bull Durham, I noticed down the street a bit,
a stairway parallel to the street going up while the sidewalks went down.
I don't recall ever seeing that before.

Jon,
There are so many interesting little details like the stair construction you noted that would be fun to model.
But, I would need a huge basement space to be able to build all of it!
That same photo has a large clock advertising the jeweler's business -
I may try to model that, if I can locate a clock the appropriate size.

Haven't posted on here for a little while, but enjoy the great stuff on the Gilpin (been lurking).
For those on Facebook, I had seen that there was no group on the C&S, so I had created one this week.
(There were 100 members in one day, I was shocked)
It is open to posts on the Gilpin as well as the predecessor roads to the C&S.
I just let everybody know on there about this excellent discussion and forum.
Please join us over there as well you are certainly welcome.
Colorado and Southern narrow gauge facebook group

Thanks Jim !
I'm a founding member and came over from the C&S mail listing.
The FB page has been quite active since it started up.
Seeing a lot of your Dad's photos of the Gilpin there as well,
most I think you already posted here at FR.

Anyone interested in owning a little Gilpin history?
I was looking in zillow and found this:
This vast amount of property is composed of
SAPHYRE, MECHANICS, NORTH AMERICAN, BUCKLEY GUNNELL, JAMES HENRY,
GUNNELL #2, GUNNELL #2, SAPHYRE, MOUNT LINCOLN, Five GUNNELL, claims.
Totaling 19.12 ACRES Prime for development ... for only $425,000.
Who doesn't want to own a gold mine or 2, or 10?
Somewhere on the 19 acres must have been some tram trackage.

Jon,
Could be fun to check out, but the real problem is getting alone with US EPA.
The Price of the land, not bad for 20 acres.
Then what could be the price to make US EPA happy.
A couple years ago I saw the Grand Army Mine site for sale,
just the foot print of the mine for $5000.00.
Thanks, great post.
Thanks
Monte

Just like for the 49ers, the thought of owning a gold mine is intriguing,
and some Gilpin right of way makes it even better.
Mills and smelters of course were a mess, but were mines generally that bad?
I know the water leaches out heavy metals, (see Gold King Mine spill).
I thought most of the water was leaking out the Argo tunnel,
which looks like it is a super fund site.
Maybe all those heavy metals are in the tailings piles, too.
I'm sure you're right, if the EPA comes knocking it won't be cheap.
I'd be concerned about the liability,
of a bunch of deep, unstable, open holes in the ground, close to town.
