I just came across an interesting collection of photos from 1907 that were used to promote rail travel along the California coast on the Southern Pacific Railroad. They are all in color, and I believe were hand-tinted as color images from pre-WWI are exceedingly rare. That said, whoever did the coloring was well skilled. Most do not have that typically obvious hand-painted look.

There are over a hundred images, starting in Los Angeles, and working north to Oregon, including images of San Francisco’s resurrection from the 1906 earthquake.

While most of the images show scenes from the local communities along the way, there are also some very nice images of the railroad and its right of way, including a fantastic image of the Grant's Pass Mine in southern Oregon and a nice shot of the end of a long passenger consist at Shasta Springs.

A word to the wise. Right click and save any images you may want to view later to your hard drive. I have no idea how long this article will remain active.

I hope you enjoy this fascinating look back.
