Nice start. Is the back scene shown above going to the the area of the layout? If so, I would suggest rocks and trains for starters... sorry, I'm a smart a..
I'll be watching. I hope it is desert, I like desert.

i am leaning more towards a desert scene ;i like the echo canyon area in ut on the way to wyoming ,its a beautiful sandstone canyon /also some kind of logging or quarry scene would be god ,i have to push things around putting some dirt on the layout/with other words saddle the horse backwards :adding terrain first an then ala RRedford : let a Train run through it, !

There's uranium in that country. You could have a nice mining layout. I'm also partial to mines.

Ahhh, a "clean slate" to work with.I'm sure you will get some ideas and trains running soon. One thing I can write is to keep things simple. It is cool to want the Grand Canyon, Mystic Seaport, the Rockies, logging, mining, sugar cane scenes, etc... but it is better to go with one idea and carry it through. My choice is mining, I love logging, etc. but as Clint Eastwood (Dirty Harry) once said-"A man has to know his limitations"...It has worked for me.
Now, get to work on that layout.
