Not a bad attempt. I think useing Sedum makes the branches to straight. I wonder if there is another variety with less straight branches?
The bark looks good, is that the stuff that comes in a roll for hanging baskets?

I think polyfibre stretched over the wire armatures and dusted with suitable flock would be my attempt with leaves.
