Martin--That's an impossible question for me to answer--since I have never seen the stuff. I don't know anywhere that it grows in the NE US. Like gum trees, I think that answers are going to have to come from outside the US.

I like type C the most. Think that color is closest too the actual color for the heather I know.
Type A is a bit too dark / intense. Type B is a bit light.

Alwin,
Heather is indigenous to the UK, more than anywhere else in the world some say.
There is no simple answer, it depends on :
1) (Crucially) - the time of year; various coloured species flower at different times.
2) Locality (north or south).
3) Altitude.
In general terms, your Type A is best - typically of rougher ground in autumn, both north & south but absolutely right for northern hills (& also southern rough, higher heathland/moor areas).

Michael, Martin,
We've got heather in the Netherlands too. Overhere it looks like this:
Dutch heathland
I see heathland here often so I know the color overhere is almost like the one shown in the link. With that color I think color A is to hard / dark.
I like to see a picture of the heathland were you were talking about to compare that with heathland overhere. My quick google search gave me nothing.

Hello Alwin,
Sorry for my delay in replying, we've been away from home & internet for a while.
Your link to "Dutch Heathland" could almost be England but your pinky/purple colour and the shape of the heathers looks softer & more gentle than ours.
Regards Michael
