HIYA!!!
Well I figure it like this see....
I have a good 20 year's worth of working left in me and I'm "hoping " I have about 20 more for goofing around with 25 hertz cat!!
So...... I just might get er done... I just need a jig, an insanely large basement 2 cows, 2 hogs and 17 very large egg laying hens, cause I bet the wire will make me go cookoo! !!!
Anyone notice I said absolutely nothing about a house ?
Sparked up smokebox.....

That was a cool video. It reminded me of a local O scale club's layout. It's the Detroit Model Railroad Club in Holly, Michigan. It's been around for as long as I can remember... and probably older than I am. It's built in an old movie house in a small town in SE Michigan. It's been many years since I've visited and I can see from the video that much of it has changed since then. Here is a link to a recent video.

And here is a ride on video.

The Detroit layout is certainly a monumental effort, but a little too much "spaghetti bowl" for my taste. Still, something like that must be designed with public shows in mind--and the public won't come (and pay) if there isn't action.
Different strokes----

I felt the same way, Herb. Back about 20 years ago I seriously considered joining that club. Back then I didn't have the space for a layout and I figured I could learn from some of the older guys. But then I looked at the layout itself and it looked too much like a bunch of track and not enough like real life. Also, the members were mostly very old guys and I was still not yet 30. We didn't have much in common but the thing that put me off the most were all the guys showing up with giant, super expensive brass locomotives. I knew I couldn't never afford one of those so I wouldn't ever really fit in. Back then they also had a waiting list to get in. I see today that memberships are open... Humm... Nope! I'll just stay the Lone Ranger and do my own thing.... and post about it and learn from the guys here at Free Rails. Last edited on Tue Apr 2nd, 2013 06:54 pm by mwiz64

HIYA Everyone....
OK, this is pretty much where I have decided to go with my layout.
And this is a someday thing (still stuck in a tiny APT.)
1.) 2 levels along the outer walls, in 2 of the four corners I want a city type atmosphere with trolleys and inturaban freight ops. The giant W shape seems the most practical because I can set a pair of helix's at the long leg of the W to go from lower to upper levels.
On the rough and tough side of town will be freight yards, engine facilities car barns and such. With the city taking up about 6 sq feet being modeled. Having trolley and heavyweight passenger stations in the same building.
2.) Double track mainlines with double crossovers at each block signal for better freight and passenger service.
3.) The ENTIRE upper level will wind through canyons swinging back and forth over rivers and streams (24" depth Max) while running along side Appalacian mountains that run from about eye height to the ceiling.
4.) The whole thing will be under wire!!!! 600 volt through out the city. 25 Hz on the main line and yes Herb...... I'm going to go there and model ( FAKE) thrid rail in my yards.
I got the rest of my life to do it and if I flip out making the wire, my wife can make padded panneling for my room with the 17 big chicken hens!!!!!
LOL

A shed with a model railroad, 17 chickens, and dirty moles?
What else aren't you telling us?
