Hi, I building a diorama that serves as transitory module between the Gn15 module parts of my friend and mine. My vision is a kind of mysterious subterranean catacombs, where the train can disappear through a heavy wooden gate. (Inspired by the book "The city of dreaming books" by Walther Moers) Walls will be covered with sandstone brickwork, carving the stones into plates of styrofoam. For the colouring I have tried oil chalks, rubbed with my finger. I'm not sure about the effect, what do you think? ![]() ![]() Juergen Last edited on Fri Feb 8th, 2013 12:50 am by Toeffelholm |

Thank you very much James for your opinion, so I will go on and see how it looks when the greater areas are modeled. If someone has an Idea, where to get a soundfile with the creaking and squeaking of an old gate, please tell me. Juergen Last edited on Thu Oct 11th, 2012 02:44 pm by Toeffelholm |

I Googled "soundfile creaking gate" and came up with too many sites to even begin to copy off. Most were for "door creaking". Some of these were even free mp3 soundwaves, while some cost a bit. Since I'm at work and actually supposed to be producing I can't stop and send any links at present. They are out there. I did not find any sound modules, but then, I didn't search for that either. |

James, thank you very much for your effort. I could even have googled this by myself, but I didn't because I really expected that examples for such a special noise are hard to find. So, it seems they are not and will consult google for this. The soundmodul I will take for background sounds, is the Dreamplayer from Fantasonics. http://www.fantasonics.com/store/store.html thanks, Juergen |

Will you require any human skulls or bones for the scene? How about a model of Vincent Price in his "Masque of Red Death" costume? I'm just kidding! Your work is very nice, I love the scene! Woodie |

Hi, the catacombs in the book I mentioned as my inspiration don't serve as burial place, what is the usual purpose for catacombs. The catacombs in the story of the book, are placed under the town "Buchheim", a town where everything revolves around books and literature. Bucheim has highest density of book stores, antiquarian bookshops, poets, writers, agents, critics etc. you can imagine, and under this town there are catacombs where thousands of old books are stored. My modeling will be a very free interpretation of this. Juergen Last edited on Fri Oct 12th, 2012 03:03 pm by Toeffelholm |

Neat gargoyles, especially the two in the center picture. I always wanted to build a structure with two like that above a doorway, or at corners of the roof. Trouble is that only on a very large building would they be appropriate--and I would never have enough space for such a building. Just as well, visitors would ask if they were relatives of mine. I really like your brickwork. I would like to be able to use some of the foam I have for walls like yours. Just wondering... 1. - How did you carve the lines in the foam? I've tried, but end up tearing big chunks out. 2. - The white in the picture - is that simply paint, or did you put on a thin coat of plaster? Please be sure to update as you progress. Thanks! Steve, for engraving the styrofoam I used I kind of clutch pencil with a thick stable lead. ![]() Before colouring, the styrofoam gets a coat with a stuff that is called "Rubens fine pastel ground" from the artist supply. That fills the masonry joints and gives the surface a grounding. ![]() Juergen Juergen Last edited on Fri Feb 8th, 2013 12:54 am by Toeffelholm |

Man, great concept and execution. Thanks for sharing your technique. I might attempt something similar to make some foam rock walls. Can't wait to see it when your done. Dan B |

Hello Si, nice that you like it. There was no further progress up to now as there are too many modelling battle fields and too less time. But I'm recently working on my modules again and so, thank you very much for encouraging. Si. wrote:

Thanks for your nice comments guys. This module serves a a "bridge-module" between the imaginative creations of my friends KEG/Otter1 -like the steam punk laboratory or the Frank&Stein company with a vampire flight training school in the upper part - and my Toeffelholm layout, that is a bit more situated in the "real" world. ![]() So the bridge-function has as well a dramaturgic purpose as a technical one. It connects the Code 143 rail profile I use with the Code100 profile used by my friend and provides access to the track in the upstage of my friends modules. So trains can disappear in the catacombs and appear again in the other direction on the front track. I was so much fascinated by this idea of a subterranean storage place for books, that I had to model my own Toeffelholm version. I really recommend you this wonderful book "The City of dreaming books" Not so much trains in it - except from the book railroad of the rusty gnomes- but if you are a friend of imagination, you will love it. Hi Woodie, I only recognized that I didn't proceed this thread, and thought I should add the last state of things. Still not finished - e.g. the track for the book car, that my good old friend Otter1 built for me, is missing completely - but at the moment I'm focused on my 1:13 modeling. Juergen |
