The two on the bottom row, center and right are way cool. Really like the balloon tired one. There is a lot of interesting ideas on all of them.

Railcars being my preferred rail subject I have collected over the years a ton of pics. Currently going through other projects I have no time to sort them out, but will ASAP and then star posting them here. In the meantime this is what I find while wandering around.

Ive been tempted to make one of these for some time, as I have own a 47 Willys truck and I know where I can get a free set of fairmont wheels. But then reality hits me and I realize I wouldn't have any sane place to drive it with the railroad wheels  down

Not a bad idea-Im not far from the Yreka Northern. Im even closer to the former SP route over Siskiyou Pass that, I dont believe is being operated currently. Then again if I dd do the hi-rail conversion I'd hate to found out the hard way that I was incorrect in my assumption.

pipopak: If you have any pictures of the Willys Hi-rail,Id love to see them, Ive probably seen what is on the internet. Ill try to dig up a few myself and post them

I mentioned a tourist line because they receive at least token maintenance. An abandoned one, well, you are on your own. Things like bridges, if still present at all, probably are just shaky affairs.
All the pictures I have are from the 'net. Have to sort them as time allows.

Heres another shot of a Willys Hi-Rail wagon taken on The Southern Pacific's Nacozari Railroad, which travelled from Douglas, Arizona into the northern Sierra Madre mining town of Nacozari, where it interchanged with the 3' narrow gauge Moctezuma Copper Co railroad. I almost included this railroad in the Sonora Narrow Gauge book as it is one of those shortlines that could almost be considered an honorary narrow gauge, but didnt. 

Anyways, this angle shows the simplicity of the front end rail conversion portion. To me it looks like the chain hoop holds the rail wheels up while driving on the road. I dont see how the wheels lifted up though-it would seem to me to be too heavy to simply lift the wheels and hook the chain up.



I know I have more pics of this beauty buried deep in my research archieves, but turkey dinner is starting to smell too good to ignore-Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Heres a detail of the previous shot showing the front end mechanism. Offhand I dont see anything that couldn't be fabricated. As I had mentioned, I have access to a set of standard gauge wheels from a Fairmont.

Also-does anyone have a guess as to the function of the two parts that goes from the axle over the wheel and flange?

Also, would the weight of the wheelset alone be enough to keep the Willys ontrack, or would you think the rail wheels would need to bear more weight?
