The September issue of Railroad Model Craftsman has an article, with plan, of the small Shays-- seemed to be a lot of variation in the early builds. If you are a Shay nut (and I'm not) the magazine is worth the price just for the article. Herb ![]() |

I haven't been getting a lot of RMCs this year -- a little too much Lehigh Valley and 3-part articles on mine blower houses for me. I mean, if you're into Lehigh Valley (and I'm an ARHS member), well, OK, but even I burn out. Maybe look at the Shay thing again -- but then, mightn't that have been a better choice for Bob Brown than the stuff he's been running in the Gazette? I mean, the 3-part thing on the well house and stuff for the freelance HOn30 layout? I'm wondering if many of these guys have been at it a little too long. I sent Brown some corrections for the last-issue-but-one, and he hasn't run them -- likely won't, since he was pretty angry that I pointed them out to him. I just read this article on smaller Shays yesterday, and thought it was quite good. There are quite a few photos here of small Shays, too. |

RMC article is authored by Mark Fry. RMC drawing looks like it could be part of the drawing that you show, but is credited to Ken Lawrence- "based on drawings by Mark Fry" No idea how much of text is the same. Herb ![]() |

I have that FSM mag with the tiny Shay article also. This shows industrial models and is quite well done. As for another 10 ton Shay, look at Gilpin Tram #1(also shown)..it was sold to the Silver City line which happens to be my layout's inspiration. Gotta love those baby Shays! Woodie |
