I've been scanning nearly 40 years of railfan photos lately, and Lucas's post on the WP&Y shovel noses reminded me that I have a WP&Y trip to scan. I drove up to Whitehorse from Los Angeles in 1982 to ride a steam fantrip from Whitehorse to Skagway. This was their last year running freight and running the whole length of the line.

Here are shovelnose photos from that trip:

They ran the fan trip because they'd just gotten 2-8-2 73 back from being restored. They had some idea of turning the line into an East Broad Top or Durango & Silverton operation. Lots of luck with that. Here are some shots of 73 making up the train in Whitehorse in the early morning of July 5, 1982.

That reminded me that I have a PFM WP&Y 2-8-2 from the 1960s in the send-out-to-be-painted queue:

I've been meaning to check it over to see how close it is to 73. Right offhand now, I can see the current 73 doesn't have that ladder on the tender side. Now I'll have to take a closer look at exactly what the model is.

Nice pics-thanks for sharing. I just can't get over the fact that both a Ford Fairmont and an AMC Eagle both made it to Alaska-they must have taken the ferry!

Ha! Not just an Eagle and a Fairmont -- an even more unlikely candidate made it there and back, and I guarantee you, it didn't take the ferry

Lucas, I used to do my own painting of brass, but I decided it's more cost-effective to let someone else do the grit blasting and such.

A couple of tank cars at Skagway. They hauled jet fuel to the Whitehorse airport.

I don't know where 42 came from. It doesn't appear to be an ex-Colorado car.

62 is an ex UTLX car from the D&RGW. Blackstone really ought to do these in HOn3.
