I hope someone out there can help me determine wether this will work. I am building a narrow guage layout in 1/120 scale using N scale track and mechanisms. (see my thread in narrow guage--"Bob Springs RGS #42"-also--"TTn 3.5")
My first conversion (#42) was pretty simple as I didn't have to change anything mechanical. I used Athearn's 2-8-0 as a starting point. What I have in mind next is to make 4-6-0 #20 from another Athearn 2-8-0. The two middle axels have blind drivers. What I would need to do is discard axel #2 and move axel #1 to its space leaving room for the rear pilot axel. Has anyone had one of these engines apart? Can this be done?
HELP!

Howdy Unk...sure it can be done. Now, I ain't an N scale loco fiddler, but somebody put the loco together so it can be taken apart. I would advise being really careful (you know that already). The only thing is whether the drivers have gears on each one (many N scale steam locos have this) and then you'd have to be careful that the siderods wouldn't bind. Also, is there clearance for flanged drivers where the blind one was? If so, then it sounds very do-able. If all else fails, you could go the H. Kephart route and make a new frame from brass...yowsah!! Let us know how this works out, if you do this conversion, then you can build Rolex watches for a living. (I am kidding...sort of..) Woodie

OK Bob-now yer goin' CRA-ZEE! I might consider using a 4-6-2 for #20 if the drivers are OK or even close. The deal with the cylinders and 4 wheel lead truck would be taken care of. Wonder why nobody makes an N scale 10 wheeler anyway? At least I don't think one is offered. Now that K made from an inside frame 2-8-0...that's where I call it CRA-ZEE!. There again, it can be done but I would rather spend the time making a layout to run engines on than making nothing but engines. Your little 2-8-0 is great, why not make a couple more of that one? How about this-make a 1:120 scale Mason Bogie. You could use an N 0-6-0 mechanism with a 6 wheel N passenger truck under the bunker...A Bogie would be a very cool loco to have anyway! Just imagine one with a Lake red paint job, or maybe Hunter green paint with red driver centers, white tires, brass boiler bands and dome inserts...colorful to be sure! Oh geez-I have said too much already. Woodie
The K-why not make a ng mike with INSIDE FRAMES...there were more of them than there were outside frame locos...Uintah had one, EBT had several, WP&Y...on and on...

Mudhen Madness? I have always LOVED those K-27's!
Might not be as hard as you'd think. Most N scale axels are geer driven, the rods are just for show so as long as they don't bind...
Glue counterweight cranks to the wheels with a little offset clearence behind for a fake frame to fit under. Cosmetic rods connect to the cranks.
I can see it now. 455 with that awful cutdown standard guage cab on piont, Maybe 461 cut in about 2/3rds back... AHHHHH!!!!!!!

I was just looking over a set of plans for #20. She has 42in drivers so I need to find an N scale engine with 56in scale drivers. Total axel span is 117in-- 156in, in N scale or .975in actual (for the 1/120 scale model). I can't remember what size drivers a USRA pacific had but might be close enough?
If not, I'll bet drivers off a Model Power mike would fit a Model Power pacific. Can parts for these engines be found? I don't think I want the 20 badly enough to invest in TWO engines.
