I was wondering if anyone has a good plan for a 4x8 logging railroad that could be expanded in the future.  I recently acquired a Bachmann three truck shay, 8 log cars, and a Barnhart and would like to put them to work.

I keep pondering how to fit a switch back into such a small layout.

I will post any progress I have made as well,

Thanks,

Richard

Welcome :)

Google is your friend! Any number of 4x8 track plans could be adapted to what you'd like.

Dont be afraid to design your own plan either, it's good to have guidance though!.

Not all logging lines had switchbacks, but they are fun to see in action. Do you want a roundy-round loop as well?

Thanks for the welcome ytter_man

After seeing the Cass scenic railroad, which has two switch backs I have been fixated on having at least one to gain elevation.  I believe it would be fun to operate and show the casual nature of logging railroad.  I just read a story about an Ely-Thomas logging train stopping at a church for a Sunday picnic on it's way to the mill with a load of logs.

I know 4x8 layouts are small but I wanted to get started in the hobby with something small and plan the layout so I can add on a mill and service area in the future, possibly one more switch back.

Thanks again,

Richard

Hi Richard.

Have a look at the Possum Valley.

It is an N scale logger but maybe you could adapt it for HO or at least get some ideas for your HO layout.

The PV has a switchback and some hidden track where a spur could be installed for expansion.

Here is a link.
