 Steve, for engraving the styrofoam I used I kind of clutch pencil with a thick stable lead.



Before colouring, the styrofoam gets a coat with a stuff that is called "Rubens fine pastel ground" from the artist supply. That fills the masonry joints and gives the surface a grounding.
