|Speaking of what it looks like now, Idaho Springs is one of the few places I know where century old mining equipment sits so close to modern establishments. It's really a bit odd. Here's an example of what I mean [image below]. Notice the Safeway (it's a grocery store for those who don't have them locally) behind the battery loco and car. The grocery store is literally across the street from a huge hill-side mine and mill.
Though, admittedly, whenever I think "Idaho Springs" I usually also think "Tommy Knockers" (which despite the name "brewery and pub" is quite family friendly). http://tommyknocker.com/
